Panama Canal Essay The canal was the best thing that ever happened to Panama. The Panama Canal was started under President Roosevelt and completed by his successor, William Howard Taft. The canal was built across an isthmus, a narrow body of land that connects two larger land areas, which connects North and South America. In some places in Panama the isthmus is only 50 miles across. The French started the canal in the late 1800’s. They had just built the then famous Suez Canal with relative ease. The Suez Canal, unlike the Panama Canal, was a straight canal on level ground, in a relatively dry climate. The French had failed in building the Panama Canal because of the tropical climate, in which deadly tropical diseases consumed their workers, and because of the mountain range in which they could not cut through. He had planned to build the canal in the way of the Suez Canal, straight and sea level. You can see the trouble with trying to cut out that much land, through the mountain range, making i t at sea level. The Americans tried their hand in the early 1900’s. Three main people helped made the canal a success. Teddy Roosevelt was one of those people; he saw the military importance of a canal. He called for the cruiser, Oregon, to sail around South America from San Francisco to Cuba so it could be present in the battle at Santiago Bay. The entire journey took ten weeks. Beauty Pageants aren't Exploitive All kinds of beauty pageants are held every year. Many girls are dreaming to participate in them to show theirselves and achieve what they want. In order to get the chance, they may use different ways. Therefore, some people think that beauty pageants are kind of exploitive, which I am disagree with . Proponents of this idea claim that looking good is the standard you get into through a beauty pageant but ignore the deeper meanings of women.There is nothing wrong with judging people primarily on their physical conditions. We do this all the time in competitive sport, where fitness and strength are major determinants of success. Every competition, of every kind, values certain qualities over others. Similarly, we can give a prize to a beautiful woman for her beauty without implying that beauty is all that matters about anyone. People who against it think that beauty pageants make harmful attitudes to women.In a society which there really are fewer opp ortunities for women than for men, beauty pageants give women a chance to get noticed and to improve their situations. Purpose Essay The purpose I feel passionate about is helping youth who struggle with mental illness. I've chosen this because I know how difficult life can be when one has to deal with these challenges on a daily basis; in my case that is Social Anxiety and COD. The way Social Anxiety has affected my life is that it has made it very difficult to have relationships with family and peers. I don't participate in activities that I would have otherwise been involved in and just overall it keeps me from wanting to be out in the world.COD has altered my life to the point where life is inflexible. By that I mean I feel compelled to follow certain routines every day and constantly worry about different things. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAME), â€Å"mental disorders in children and adolescents are real and can be effectively treated, especially when identified and treated early. â€Å"(l) â€Å"Nonetheless, the ventilating majority of children with mental disorde rs fail to be identified, lack access to treatment or supports and thus have a lower quality of life.Stigma persists and millions of young people in this country are left behind. â€Å"(2) Through my research I have learned how serious the consequences can be for young people who do not get treatment. The most serious outcomes can be â€Å"suicide, school failure and juvenile and criminal Because of my own suffering and that of other children and teens, would like to make a difference in the lives of those who have been impacted by mental illness by starting a blob, where they can share their feelings about their battles, so that hey won't feel so alone.Also, by writing about their lives and telling their stories, hopefully it will advise young people who don't have a mental illness about what those who do go through. My blob would feature adults who have dealt with mental health challenges when they were younger, and in their own words, how they overcame them. In addition, I woul d include suggestions for students on how they can support their friends who have a mental illness.
